Illness at School

Our team of first aiders, are here to support you with medical issues. We have a well-equipped medical room. This is where a pupil should come if he/she is feeling unwell. If the Medical Room is unattended, pupils should report directly to the front office.

Where it is possible to do so, your child will be seen and returned to lesson as soon as possible. However, if he or she is thought to be so unwell he/she cannot remain in school, we will make direct contact with you to arrange for him/her to be collected. In an emergency, we will ring for an ambulance as well as making contact with home.

Consequently, we may need to contact you during the day and it is vital that the School Office always has up-to-date emergency numbers for parents/carers, so that we can contact you at all times.  In some cases it may be advisable to provide us with the name and contact details of an extended family member or close family friend.

If your child attends the Medical Room, the visit will be recorded on our first aid log. Where there is special concern, we will contact you by telephone.

Medication: All medication should be handed into the Medical Room for safe keeping together with a completed School Medicine Record – available from Reception. Unfortunately, staff cannot be responsible for holding or administering medicines without the School Medicine Record being completed and returned to the office. We are, however, happy to assist your child if they need help with administering the medicine, if indicated on the form.  It is the responsibility of the child to remember to come for their medication.

It is the responsibility of parents/carers to ensure that adequate supplies of medication are sent into school where needed and to ensure that these are in date.

Asthma Inhalers:  Children may carry their inhaler on their person if a Medicine Record Form has been completed and signed by parents/carers giving their child permission to do so. However, the school cannot be held responsible for these inhalers and any monitoring of usage.  We recommend that all inhalers are named clearly and that a second inhaler is left in the Medical Room in case of emergency. Once again, we will require a Medicine Record Form.

Epi Pens: Children may carry their Epi pen on their person if a Medicine Record Form has been completed and signed by parents/carers giving their child permission to do so. However, the school cannot be held responsible for these. We recommend that all Epi pens are named clearly and that a second pen is left in the Medical Room in case of emergency. Once again, we will require a Medicine Record Form.

It is the responsibility of parents/carers to ensure that adequate supplies of medication are sent into school where needed and to ensure that these are in date.

Care Plans: If your child suffers from a particular medical condition, please make contact with the Office so that a care plan can be put in place.

Sun Protection: When the weather is hot we will do our best to provide shade at break and lunch times, but suggest that parents/carers equip their children with long sleeved shirts, a hat or peaked cap and apply high factor sunscreen if there is a danger of sunburn. This is particularly important when pupils are involved in activities that require a lot of time outdoors.

Should your child bring sunscreen to school, this should be labelled clearly with their name and form. Please make clear to your child that this product is for their own personal use only.

Please note that whilst we are happy to provide first aid when pupils are feeling poorly or have injured themselves, we do not have qualified medical staff on site. As a result, we are unable to advise on medical conditions. Like you, if we have any serious concerns in relation to your child’s health, we will dial 101 or 999.
